Sikh Faces of the First World War: Experienced Eyes.

This mesmerising portrait of Havildar Sunder Singh depicts an experienced soldier in the middle of the war looking wistfully at what might be to come.

This pastel and crayon sketch by Swiss artist Eugene Burnand dates from 1917. It formed part of a series called 'Les Allies dans La Guerre des Nations' (The Allies in the War of Nations).

Burnand completed 104 of these pieces and spent time in Paris, Marseille and Montpellier finding the variety of subjects he wanted. This is where he most likely captured Sunder Singh's portrait although he gives little information about the sitter.

Over the next three years, the UKPHA team will be providing resources to help people find, research and present stories of their ancestors who were touched by the First Word War and we hope to learn more about men like Sunder Singh.

Join us in uncovering more stories and supporting and assisting our research as UKPHA embarks on an exciting new project 'Empire, Faith & War: The Sikhs and World War One'.
