The voice of the Indian sepoy (soldier) during the First World War is rarely heard.
More often, its the senior British officer who is quoted and referred to. However, the pioneering work of Dr David Omissi in uncovering translations of the letters of the soldiers and publishing them has given these common soldiers a voice. His work has been widely quoted and referenced this year and rightly so.
When you read the lines 'No man can return to the Punjab whole. Only the broken limbed can go back', it is because of the work of David Omissi in researching and publishing these letters.
