Harbans Singh's ancestor was one of the very few survivors of the 14th Sikhs during the disaster that was the Gallipoli campaign.

For the frail 89-year-old, the First World War does not signify conflict, but friendship, a bond born of war that lived long after the last troops returned home.

It began on 4 June 1915, the first day of the Third Battle of Krithia, fought on the Gallipoli peninsula (present-day northern Turkey) between British and French forces allied against and military might of the Ottoman Empire.
